An argument could be made that the beaches of Theoule-sur-Mer are the most beautiful of the French Riviera. Certainly the topography is completely different from the gently-rising hills of Cannes and Nice to the northeast. Here, the Esterel massif dips right down to the sea, carving out coves and inlets with jagged spikes of ochre rock. The contrast between the azur sea and the coppery cliffs is stunning.
Nice Uncovered: Walks Through the Secret Heart of a Historic City

Stretching in a curve from the tiny Plage du Maurin northeast of the village through the crowning jewel, Plage de l'Aiguille, to the rugged Plage de Gardanne and beyond to the Plage de la Figueirette in the south, there are seven public beaches and five beach restaurants. Some beaches are sandy and all look out on the Golfe de la Napoule with a view of Cannes and the Iles de Lerins. The offshore waters are marked with buoys to indicate a Sentier de Découverte for snorkellers to explore underwater life.

The most stunning beach is the Plage de l'Aiguille on the Pointe de l'Aiguille, part of the Parc de l'Aiguille, a regional nature park that extends up the shrub-covered red cliffs. The sandy beach is widest here with a particularly intriguing rock formation at the end.

Access

Theoule-sur-Mer is easily reachable by train from Nice or Cannes. The train stop is on the TER line Nice - Cannes - Théoule - St Raphaël - Les Arcs.

From Cannes bus 620 stops at the Theoule-sur-Mer train station before ending at Le Trayas on the Plage du Vallon de l'Autel. A coastal walkway lined with flowers and Mediterranean plants meanders for about a kilometre from the Plage du Vallon de l'Autel to the Plage de l'Aiguille, passing the Plage de la Petite Fontaine. Called the Promenade de Pradayrol, this walkway is the easiest and most pleasant way to access the sandy beaches as there's parking at the Plage du Vallon de l'Autel. A more rugged approach is to drive past the town on the Boulevard de la Corniche d'Or to the entrance of the Parc de l'Aiguille where a path leads down to the Plage de l'Aiguille and the Plage de Gardanne. Free parking is available along the side of the road.
